YANGON (AFP) - Myanmar 's detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi met for several hours with her physician Sunday, witnesses said, amid worries for her health after her party said she was not accepting food.

Doctor Tin Myo Win arrived around 2:00 pm (0730 GMT) at the lakeside home where the Nobel peace laureate has been confined for most of the last 19 years, the witnesses said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

He left four-and-a-half hours later and went to the home affairs ministry, they added.

Aung San Suu Kyi 's last medical check-up by the doctor was in mid-August, before her National League for Democracy (NLD) party said September 5 that she had refused most of her food rations for the last three weeks.

Concerns over Aung San Suu Kyi have grown after she refused to meet with visiting UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari and the junta's liaison officer.

The regime says she is not staging a hunger strike, and the NLD has stopped short of using the term.

But the party has said that her refusal of food supplies was "to denounce her continuing detention, which is unfair under the law."

The 63-year-old has no other source of food aside from the daily supplies provided by the military regime.

Her party won a landslide victory in a 1990 election but the junta never allowed it to take office. The military has ruled Myanmar since 1962.

YANGON (AFP) - Detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will soon submit her first-ever personal appeal for release to Myanmar's ruling junta, her lawyer told AFP Saturday.

Kyi Win said the Nobel Prize laureate had approved the final draft of a legal appeal to the country's ruling junta for her release during a meeting Saturday afternoon at the lakeside Yangon house where she has been confined for most of the last 19 years.

"This is in fact one of the first appeals of this kind as far as I know," the lawyer said.

"From my point of view we are hoping for her immediate release," he said, adding the appeal would be submitted Monday or Tuesday.

The lawyer refused to comment on Suu Kyi's health, after reports she was not accepting food.

The meeting was their fifth since August 8 and aside from a medical check-up by her personal physician last month, Aung San Suu Kyi has refused to meet with anyone else -- including visiting UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari last month and the junta's liaison officer last week.

Her doctor Tin Myo Win is scheduled to pay her a visit at her request Sunday, he said.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) -- State-run media in Myanmar says detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has refused to meet her personal physician and a top minister, a further sign of her frustration with the slow pace of talks.
The Myanma Ahlin daily said Wednesday that Aung San Suu Kyi refused to attend a meeting with Relations Minister Aung Kyi who was appointed to facilitate reconciliation talks which have been pushed by the United Nations.
Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for 13 of the past 19 years, has also refused to see her personal physician Dr. Tin Myo Win who had come to her residence to give her a medical checkup.
Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party say her actions may reflect her growing frustration with the slow pace of reconciliation talks.

　日本国内外で災害時医療支援を行うNGO、災害人道医療支援会・HuMA（本部・東京都世田谷区）は、ミャンマーで診療所の修復などの復興支援を9月2日から開始する。サイクロン「ナルギス」がミャンマーを直撃してから約４か月。日本医科大多摩永山病院救命救急センターの医師で、HuMAの理事兼事務局長を務める島田靖氏は、現地の医療状況について、「災害初期の緊急医療支援から、建物の復旧などが必要な復興期に移行している」と話す。中でも医療機能回復のための支援が急がれるという。

【関連記事】アジアで積んだ経験をへき地・離島医療にグルジア紛争で外科医派遣へ―赤十字国際委四川大地震、支援スタッフが現状を報告ミャンマー、中国への救援金46億円超に－日赤ミャンマーに緊急支援－世界の医療団　今回、HuMAが支援活動を行うのは、ミャンマー南西部エーヤワディー管区のボーガレー市。島田氏によると、市内に約30ある診療所の多くがサイクロンで半壊・全壊などの被害を受けた。十分な医療資・機材もなく、「今も屋根のない診療所で、乳幼児健診をしているような状況」だという。　HuMAが計画しているのは、こうした診療所の復興事業。診療所の修復や医療資・機材の提供を行う。島田氏は現地の状況について、「既に多くの医療チームが国内外から被災地に入っている。サイクロン直撃から約４か月がたった今、緊急医療支援ではなく、既存の医療施設の復旧が急務だ」と話す。2日にスタッフが現地入りした後、支援する診療所を選定し、必要な資・機材を検討する。　診療所修復や資機材の提供といったハード面からの支援だけでなく、現地の医療スタッフへの教育・指導なども行う予定だ。「住民に最も近い末端の診療所で働いているのは、『保健施設のおばちゃん』という感じの女性たち。医療行為についての知識が少ない人もいる。この機会に、必要に応じて医療教育も行っていく。特に、災害発生時に多い外傷の処置などについて伝えようと考えている」と島田氏は話している。■「困難だが、できることを」　診療所の修復と医療のノウハウ提供を通じてミャンマーの復興支援を行うHuMAだが、活動に当たってはさまざまな困難が伴うという。　たとえば人繰りの問題。HuMAの医療スタッフの多くは日本の病院に勤務しており、長期間のミャンマー滞在は難しいと島田氏は話す。「だいたい1週間。最長でも2週間だ」。　ミャンマー政府による制約もある。ビザの取得やミャンマー国内での移動に対する制約はその典型だ。実は、HuMAはサイクロンの発生から約2週間後に医師2人、看護師1人を既に派遣し、同地での支援の可能性を模索していた。だが、ミャンマー政府による外国人へのビザ発給がスムーズに進まないなどの問題があったため、「この状況で災害初期の急性期医療を行うのは難しい」と判断したという。　しかし、島田氏は前向きだ。「１人の医療スタッフを継続的に派遣することは困難だが、人を入れ替えてでもなるべく医療スタッフを送りたい」と話す。また、「首都のヤンゴンから事業地のボーガレー市に移動するには、外国人は許可を取得しなければならない。大変だが、うまく事業を軌道に乗せたい」とも。　さまざまな制約が付きまとう中でも、「あの手この手で、できることをやっていく」と、島田氏は意気込みを見せた。HuMAのホームページはこちら。ミャンマー支援の募金も受け付けている。

UN special envoy thanks Thailand on help for Myanmar

Mr. Gambari, who concluded his six-day visit to Myanmar last week, thanked Mr. Samak for his help in negotiating with senior Myanmar officials who later allowed the UN chief to visit that country after Cyclone Nargis battered several parts of the country earlier this year.

He also urged Mr. Samak to continue supporting the UN in its bid to resolve thr political deadlock in Myanmar which has continued in that country since 1990 when the opposition National League for Democracy party of Aung San Suu Kyi won the majority of seats in parliamentary elections, but was prevented from taking power by the ruling military junta.

During his visit to Myanmar, Mr. Gambari met neither Mrs. Suu Kyi nor the country's top generals.

Reiterating that the Thai government would continue supporting the world body, Mr. Samak reportedly told Mr. Gambari that he would attend the UN General Assembly in late September and would find an opportunity to confer with the UN chief on the situation in Myanmar. (TNA)

Thai PM Says West Uses Myanmar's Suu Kyi As Political Tool

BANGKOK (AFP)--Thailand's prime minister on Monday criticized Western nations for pinning their efforts to bring democracy to Myanmar on the release of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Samak Sundaravej met Ibrahim Gambari, the UN's top envoy to Myanmar, on Monday and told the diplomat that efforts to engage the military regime would be more productive if the Nobel peace prize winner was left off the agenda.

"Europe uses Aung San Suu Kyi as a tool. If it's not related to Aung San Suu Kyi, you can have deeper discussions with Myanmar," he told reporters after the Bangkok meeting.

"Aung San Suu Kyi is one thing. The (international community) should talk about how to bring democracy in Myanmar and focus on the constitution and the elections," he added.

Samak said he would relay that message in a meeting with United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon in New York next month.

Gambari left Myanmar on Saturday after failing to secure a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for most of the last 19 years.

Her National League for Democracy, NLD, party has branded the UN visit a " waste of time".

Aung San Suu Kyi led the NLD to a landslide election victory in 1990, but was never allowed to govern.

The regime instead unveiled its own "road map" to democracy and drafted a new constitution, which was approved in a much-criticized referendum in May.

The junta says the charter will set the stage for elections in 2010, but the pro-democracy movement say the process simply enshrines the army's position in the nation it has ruled since 1962.

Samak said that as the current chair of regional bloc the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or Asean, Thailand would try to persuade the junta to allow observers at the promised election.

Hanoi (VNA) – Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie on August 25 met with Chief of Defence Industries of Myanmar, Tin Aye, Xinhua news agency reported.

Liang, also a state councilor, said China and Myanmar, as close and friendly neighbours, have increased cooperation in political, economic, cultural and military affairs in recent years.

The Chinese defence ministry is ready to work with Myanmar to further expand bilateral cooperation, so as to help the two nations' defence building and to safeguard regional peace and stability, the Chinese official noted.

Meanwhile, Tin Aye said Myanmar values its relations with China , hoping that the two nations would further enhance friendly cooperation. –Enditem

James Bond actor Daniel Craig will donate about $A14,250 to buy new boats for a group of fishermen in Burma's Irrawaddy delta that was ravaged by Cycl

Craig will donate four seagoing vessels and 21 smaller boats to fishermen in Ah-lai-thaung village of Pyin-kha-yaing town, Flower News weekly reported.

'His representative came to Myanmar (Burma) and said he will pay for 25 fishing boats, and our committee brought the representative to that village," a member from the fishery rehabilitation committee told the publication.

It will cost about 15 million kyats (about $A14,250) for the fishing boats made locally, he said.

U.N. humanitarian chief to visit Myanmar next week

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes said on Wednesday he would visit Myanmar next week to check on aid delivery to the isolated country that initially shut out foreign relief workers after a deadly cyclone in May.

Holmes told a news conference he would spend three days in Myanmar after a meeting in Singapore with officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Monday to assess the situation after the cyclone.

He said he would visit the Irrawaddy Delta, the area worst hit when Cyclone Nargis struck on May 2-3, leaving an estimated 138,000 people dead or missing. He also hoped to meet Prime Minister Thein Sein.

The United Nations appealed last week for more than $300 million in additional aid for Myanmar, on top of $178 million already provided by donors.

Myanmar's secretive military government lifted restrictions on foreign aid workers after a visit in late May by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Holmes, who accompanied Ban, is making his first visit to the country since then.

Holmes said he wanted to "reassess the situation for myself."

"The problems are not entirely disappeared but certainly containable for the moment," he said. "But we want to make sure they stay that way."

The United Nations said on Tuesday that Myanmar had invited Ban's special representative for the country, Ibrahim Gambari, to visit next month. Gambari, seeking to promote democracy in Myanmar, will be making his fourth visit since the ruling junta cracked down on monk-led protests last September.

1. 我が国は、今般のミャンマー南部に上陸した大型サイクロンによる甚大な被害を踏まえ、国際移住機関（IOM）を通じ、300万ドルの緊急支援を実施することを決定した。
2. 本 件は、IOMの策定したサイクロン被災民のための住居復旧計画の実施のために拠出するものであり、本件計画の実施により、ミャンマー南西部エーヤワディー 管区のボーガレー市、ピャポン市及びモーラミャインジュン市を中心とするサイクロン被災地域の約6、700世帯（約33，000人）に対し、トタン板（約 16万枚）を含む住宅建設資材及び工具が配給される。
3. なお、本件支援は、5月9日にミャンマーに対する当面の支援として実施を決定した1，000万ドルを上限とする緊急支援の一部として実施されるものであり、この支援により、1，000万ドル全ての支出につき決定したことになる。

（参考） 5月2日から翌3日にかけて、ミャンマーを直撃した大型サイクロンにより、同国南部を中心に甚大な人的・物的被害が発生した。6月24日のチョウ・トゥ外務副大臣の発表によれば、犠牲者数は8万4千人以上、行方不明者数は5万3千人以上である。
